This May 18th marks 105 years since the birth of Pope Saint John Paul II. On May 18, 1920, Karol Jozef Wojtyla was born in the Polish town of Wadowice. Wojtyla went on to become Pope John Paul II, the youngest to be chosen in 132 years, the first ever Slavic pope, and the first non-Italian to hold the position since the 16th century. He was also history’s most well-traveled pope having made 104 pastoral voyages. In his 14 Encyclicals, he comprehensively presented the faith of the Church and its teaching. In celebration of his birthday, we will pray the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, also referred to as the Mysteries of Light, which were instituted by Pope John Paul II in 2002 in his Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae. They demonstrate the light of God manifested through Jesus. Following our daily Rosary, we will view a short film, featuring Father Michael Gaitley, that illustrates the triumph over Communism that Pope John Paul II helped to inaugurate and how God revealed a beautiful plan through him that blessed the world.
