Our Lady of Snows is a title given to the Blessed Mother which originated in the Fourth Century. The Virgin Mary appeared in dreams to a wealthy, childless couple and Pope Liberius, asking for a church to be built in her honor on Rome’s Esquiline Hill. To mark the spot, she promised a miraculous snowfall, which occurred on the night of August 5th, despite it being summer, leading to the construction of what became the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.
